Flower Arranging Workshop in Saigon in English — Hands-On Class
By the Cáo Experiences team · 2026-11-01
A flower arranging workshop with Cáo Experiences is a three-hour hands-on class where you learn to design and build one complete arrangement using seasonal blooms sourced fresh that morning. We host small groups (usually 4–8 people, or private sessions for couples and families) in a family kitchen and studio space in a quiet lane off the old quarter in Saigon, conducted entirely in English. You'll move through design principles—balance, colour, texture, height—then apply them directly as you strip stems, condition the flowers, and build your piece step by step. We adapt for beginners (no prior skill needed), provide aprons and tools, and you leave with your finished arrangement wrapped for transport. Rain doesn't stop us; we work indoors. Ask us for dates and a quote on WhatsApp—sessions run weekday mornings, weekend afternoons, and are ideal for couples, solo travelers, small groups, and families with kids aged 8+. What Actually Happens Hour by Hour?
We meet at the studio around 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. depending on your booking. First 15 minutes: you arrive, we offer water or tea, show you around, and explain what we'll make today. Minutes 15–45: we walk through the fundamentals—why flowers need conditioning, how to choose a container, how to create visual weight and flow—using the actual stems and blooms you'll arrange, not slides. We demonstrate one complete sequence on a demo vase so you see it done right before you try. Next 90 minutes: you build your own arrangement. We don't sit back. We're there beside you, adjusting your hand position, suggesting where the next stem goes, catching common beginner moves (crushing stems, overcrowding the centre, making one side too heavy) before they happen. You ask questions. We answer honestly. If your piece isn't balanced at minute 100, we pause, remove a few stems, and rebuild it together. Final 15 minutes: we tie it off with a ribbon or twine, wrap it securely for carry-home, and take a photo you can share.

What Do You Learn About Flower Design?
Most guests arrive thinking arranging is just stuffing flowers into water—colour, height, done. We teach three working rules. First: the "triangle rule" (taller stems in back or centre, shorter at the edges and front) creates depth and proportion. Second: odd numbers (three roses, five eucalyptus stems, seven carnations) feel natural; pairs and even counts feel formal and stiff. Third: leave gaps. A vase that looks "full" after one hour usually looks overcrowded and droopy by hour three at home. We show you how foam structure, stem angles, and water contact work together so your arrangement lasts 7–10 days at home, not three. Because we use seasonal blooms (whatever is fresh and shipped that week), each session teaches you to work with what you have, not what Instagram expects.
Who Is This Right For—And Who Might Find It Hard?
We run these sessions for couples on their last day in Vietnam, solo travelers wanting a quiet skill, groups of colleagues, and multi-generation families. Kids aged 8+ can join; they usually love the tactile part and produce something genuinely pretty. Seniors are welcome—the standing time is 2.5 hours with a stool nearby if you need it, and the movements are gentle. Pregnant women are fine. People with severe hay fever sometimes struggle with pollen in the air; we give them a mask and open all windows. The hardest part for beginners isn't technique—it's trusting the empty space. Western guests often want to pack the vase tight; Asian guests often err too minimal. We adapt by showing you a range and letting you find your eye.
Comparison of flower workshop options and suitable setups:
| Setup | Best for | Group size | Duration | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Family studio private | Couples, families, groups wanting calm | 1–8 | 3 hours | Quiet, personal, your pace |
| Small-group class | Solo travelers, new friends | 4–8 | 3 hours | Peer learning, shared cost |
| Corporate team session | Office groups, team building | 6–15 | 2.5–3 hours | Bonding, takeaway gift for desk |
| Kids + parent session | Families with children 8–14 | 4–6 | 2 hours (shorter) | Same technique, less standing |
What Flowers Will You Use—And Can You Choose?
We source blooms fresh that morning or the evening before from wholesale suppliers in Saigon (not marked-up retail bunches). What's available changes weekly: in November–February you might work with chrysanthemums, roses, carnations, spray roses, lisianthus, eucalyptus, and statice. March–May brings dahlias, garden roses, peonies, and ranunculus. June–September is lighter (tropical ginger, celosia, solidago, daisies). We tell you what we have when you book, so you're not surprised. You can't customise the exact blooms in group classes—cost would multiply. In private sessions, we can source a specific flower if you give us two days' notice (peony in season, a rare colour). You leave with your completed arrangement in a vase or jar you've chosen from our small collection, ready to travel. If you're flying out that day, we use a shorter, sturdier vase and pack it in a sturdy box (you must carry it on the plane; checked luggage kills flowers).
How Does Rain or Hot Weather Change Things?
Our studio is indoors, air-conditioned, with large windows facing a garden lane. Rain doesn't affect you at all. Heat does slightly—flowers last longest in cool conditions, so we keep the room at 21°C, ask you to water your finished piece as soon as you get home, and suggest you keep it away from direct sun and drafts (a/c vents, open windows). If it's very hot the day of your session, we sometimes cool the water in advance or add flower food (we provide packets) to extend life. We've never cancelled or postponed a class for weather.
What Should You Bring, Wear, and Know Before You Book?
Wear clothes you don't mind getting damp—you'll splash water. Closed shoes are safest (we have floral scissors and tools on tables). If you have a flower or pollen allergy, let us know when you book; we can open doors, run a fan, or offer a mask. Bring nothing else; we provide aprons, tools, scissors, tape, ribbon, and flower food. If you're left-handed, tell us—we adjust the demo. If you wear expensive watches or rings, remove them; wet soil stains everything. Your phone is welcome for photos of the final piece. We take professional photos too and email them later.

What If You've Never Arranged Flowers Before?
Most guests arrive nervous. "I'll kill them," or "I'll make it ugly." The truth: once flowers are cut, their life is set (conditioning and water help them last longer, but don't 'save' them). And ugly is hard here because the materials are beautiful. What we actually see with beginners is two mistakes: hands too tight (squashing stems) and fear of gaps. We catch both. By minute 45, most first-timers feel confident. By minute 120, they're experimenting—trying a diagonal instead of vertical, rotating the vase to see depth, asking "what if I move this stem here?" Those moments are why we do this. You're not following a formula; you're learning to see balance and proportion with your own hands.
If you've arranged before and want something deeper, tell us. We can focus on Japanese ikebana principles (asymmetry, negative space, seasonal awareness), Western floral design (mass design, colour theory), or wild-garden style (no foam, natural movement). Same flowers, different lens.
How Much Does It Cost—And What's Included?
We don't list prices publicly; they vary by group size, season, and flower availability. Small-group sessions cost less per person than private ones. Seasonal availability affects supply costs—peonies in May cost more than chrysanthemums in January. Ask us for dates and a quote on WhatsApp with your group size and preferred timing, and we'll send a clear breakdown. Your quote includes all materials (flowers, stems, greenery, container, tools, apron, flower food, wrapping), three hours of instruction, and one completed arrangement you take with you.
How Do We Adapt for Kids, Seniors, and Allergies?
Kids (8–14): We shorten the design talk, use shorter vases so they can reach easily, pair them with an adult if first-time, and let them choose the colours and arrangement shape. Most kids love stripping leaves and playing with water. Sessions run 2 hours instead of 3.
Seniors: We provide a stool, slow the pace, emphasise the water breaks, and focus on the calm, meditative side. We've had 75-year-olds produce stunning pieces.
Allergies (hay fever, pollen, latex): Tell us when you book. We open windows, provide a mask, and use latex-free tools and tape.
Dietary/mobility needs: Ask. We'll find a way.
What to Check Before You Book
- Confirm the date works. We operate Wednesday–Sunday; Monday–Tuesday only for private groups of 6+. Check your calendar and ask us in WhatsApp.
- Confirm group size and pricing. A quote for two people looks different from eight. Be clear about who's coming.
- Mention any allergies, dietary, or mobility needs so we prepare. No surprises on the day.
- Arrange transport. The studio is in an old-quarter lane; taxis and Grab can navigate it, but arrive 10 minutes early. We'll send a location pin once you book.
- Check your departure plans. If you fly out that evening, tell us; we'll use a sturdy vase and packing.
Other Seasonal Experiences in Saigon
If you love working with your hands and want to explore Vietnam's food and craft traditions, our team also hosts Vietnamese cooking classes, street food and market tours, Vietnamese coffee workshops, and craft workshops—all in small groups, English-hosted, indoors or outdoors depending on weather. Many guests combine a flower session with a cooking class on the same day; it's a full, satisfying day. Learn more at our Saigon experiences page or contact us with questions.
We also run tea experiences, art and culture classes, and family-friendly sessions across Vietnam if you're staying longer.

FAQ
Can I do a flower workshop if I've never arranged before?
Yes. Most of our guests are beginners. We teach from zero—how to condition stems, balance weight, and use space. You'll make a finished piece.
What happens if I don't like my arrangement?
We help you fix it. We don't leave until you're happy with it, even if that means removing stems and rebuilding together.
Can I choose the flowers I use?
In group classes, no—we work with what's fresh that day. In private sessions with two days' notice, we can source a specific bloom if it's in season.
How long do the flowers last at home?
7–10 days if you change the water every two days, trim the stems, and keep them cool and away from direct sun. We give you care cards.
Is it okay if I have a pollen allergy?
Tell us when you book. We open windows, provide a mask, and choose lower-pollen flowers when possible. Several guests with hay fever have done this.
Do you offer corporate team sessions?
Yes. We run team flower workshops for 6–15 people. It's quieter than typical team-building, and everyone leaves with something beautiful for their desk. Ask us for details.
Can kids join?
Kids 8+ are welcome. Sessions are two hours (shorter than adult classes), and we adjust the vase height. Parents can join and arrange alongside them.
What if the weather is bad?
We work indoors in an air-conditioned studio. Rain doesn't affect us. Very hot days mean flowers wilt faster at home, so we give extra care tips.
